At CTC we hire trading assistants that we believe have what it takes to eventually trade for the firm. Most of our TAs come to us without prior derivatives experience. The process from trading assistant to trader is a fluid one; there are no rigid guidelines for when a trading assistant gets promoted to trader. Once a trading assistant demonstrates sufficient progress and leadership, he or she can be promoted to senior trading assistant, one step below becoming a trader.
Our management evaluates trading assistants on a merit basis, with an emphasis on responsibility assumption and progress within the education program. Given the intensely interactive nature of our team trading approach, trading assistants have virtually unlimited opportunities to demonstrate their abilities and understanding of the business of market making.

While it is difficult to generalize, a rough timeline for the progression from trading assistant to trader can be estimated. We have had TAs with internship experience at the firm become traders within seven months of joining on a full-time basis. Trading assistants without internship experience typically take from ten months to two years to progress to the trader level.
